Picolly.com patterns are classified according to the complexity of the sewing process. This overview will help you find out which patterns are right for you depending on your current sewing skill level.

For all patterns, basic skills related to working with a sewing machine is assumed (you can set different types of stitches, adjust the tension of the bobbin thread, etc.) and you should also have a basic knowledge of textile materials (you should be able to tell woven fabrics and knits apart and know the basic properties of both of these types of textile materials). If you need to refresh or expand your knowledge of textile materials, please read my article on their basic properties: Types of textile materials

Why is it necessary to know these things? Because without their knowledge it is not possible to make progress. If you want to drive a car, then you must first go to a driving school, which includes the study of theoretical and practical aspects of driving. 🙂 So, before you start sewing, please read my article about materials. You can also download one of my free patterns and try to sew something according to it.

…it doesn’t matter how many years you have been sewing for, the important thing is how many different products you have sewn.

Remember, it doesn’t matter how many years you have been sewing for, the important thing is how many different products you have sewn.

This section also includes patterns designed for flexible materials. Even beginners are expected to have knowledge of their sewing machine and knowledge of working with stretchy materials. If you are going to sew knits (elastic materials) on a regular sewing machine, I highly recommend reading this article before you buy a pattern designed for knits:

Sewing elastic fabrics with a regular sewing machine – 4 steps to success

All patterns in my online store are categorized according to the sewing skill level needed to use them and achieve satisfactory results.

Patterns for beginners

The patterns and instructions in this category are suitable for beginners. Most of these patterns are designed for woven fabrics (inelastic materials), or they are very simple patterns designed for knitted fabrics (knits, laid-in knits – tracksuit fabric, etc.). Sewing according to these patterns should be easy even for seamstresses who are just starting out. These patterns are accompanied by detailed photo instructions, thanks to which you can sew step by step.

Patterns for intermediate seamstresses

Patterns in this category are suitable for beginners who can sew woven fabrics (inelastic materials) and knits. It is assumed that a beginner of this kind can sew a basic T-shirt, leggings or, for example, simple sweatpants. All patterns for intermediate seamstresses are accompanied by detailed photo instructions, thanks to which you can sew children’s, women’s or men’s clothing step by step.

Patterns for advanced seamstresses

This section contains patterns and instructions that are suitable for advanced seamstresses. All patterns in this category are accompanied by detailed photo instructions, but for satisfactory results it is necessary to have deeper knowledge and more practical experience. Good knowledge of different materials and skills related to pattern layout (positioning the pieces on the fabric) are assumed. It is also assumed that the seamstress can handle her sewing machine perfectly and that she can measure (and work with) body dimensions correctly. The seamstress must be able to choose the appropriate size of the pattern and adjust it so that the garment fits perfectly.

Patterns for experienced seamstresses

Patterns in this category (and related instructions) require even deeper knowledge and experience with sewing various types of garments. Despite the existence of detailed photo instructions, sufficient skills are needed. It is assumed that the seamstress has very good knowledge of various materials and that she can easily position the pattern on the fabric and adjust it as needed. It is (of course) expected that the seamstress can measure (and work with) body dimensions correctly. The seamstress is able to adjust the pattern for a perfect fit and knows her sewing machine backwards and forwards.

Patterns for masters

The patterns and instructions in this category are suitable for very experienced hobby seamstresses. Perfect knowledge of the sewing machine and the ability to work with it in concert is assumed. Furthermore, knowledge of materials and their properties, the art of pattern layout, the ability to correctly measure body dimensions and subsequently work with them confidently is expected. You can’t do without the ability to adjust the cut for a perfect fit. It is also assumed that the seamstress can work with wide range of materials (reinforcements, fusible facings, zippers…). Master hobby seamstresses should also be able to always think a few steps forward so that she can guess what will follow and proceed accordingly.
